Refractive Surgery - Other Applications

Refractive surgery treatment is used for the patients who want to get free from their glasses and contact lenses the rest of their life and Excimer Laser surgery is the most accepted and used method in refractive surgery techniques.

If Excimer Laser is not appropriate for the patients, the other treatment approaches are worth to mention such as Multifocal/Trifocal IOLs (as mentioned in cataract section), Phacic IOLs, Clear Lens Extraction, Presbylasik, Astigmatic Keratotomy can be alternative treatments with successful results.

Presbylasik: This treatment is suitable for patients whose corneal structure appropriate and who are above 45 years old, and those not want to use eye glasses for near and far vision.

AK (Astigmatic Keratotomy): This technique is mostly offered to the patients who are not suitable for Excimer Laser surgery to improve their corneal refractive power by applying arcuate incisions on the cornea with special instrument.

Phakic Intraocular Lenses: This technique mostly is performed for young patients who are not suitable for Excimer Laser and who have high myopia or hyperopia, in this technique artificial intraocular lenses are placed behind the cornea and in front of individual's own natural lens.

Clear Lens Extraction: If the patient's eye structure is not suitable for Excimer Laser or Phakic Intraocular lenses the technique to perform this surgery is removing patient's own transparent lens and placing an artificial intraocular lens with an appropriate dioptre. The main difference between this method and cataract surgery is that the lens taken from the patient has not still lost its transparency yet.

Multifocal/Trifocal Intraocular Lenses: Provide both near, far and intermediate visual distance.

Suitable Candidates for Multifocal/Trifocal Intraocular Lenses;

Individuals with cataract,

40 years of age and above, have hyperopia, and want to get free of both their near and far vision glasses,

40 years of age and below, have hyperopia, and are not suitable for Phakic Intraocular Lenses.
